Not by Scripture Alone: A Catholic Critique of the Protestant Doctrine of Sola Scriptura

Since the time of Martin Luther, Protestants have claimed that Scripture alone is the final, infallible rule of faith for man.  In doing so, they have also claimed that Sacred Tradition and Church Authority, although helpful, are not infallible and therefore cannot serve as authorities on par with Scripture.  Is this a correct understanding of Scripture, Tradition and the Church, and does either Scripture or Tradition teach that sola scriptura should be the sole guiding rule for decisions on faith and morals?  A thorough investigation into this controversy reveals that the answer is a resounding, NO.  As never before, the Catholic Church has been called upon to be the defender of Scripture and preserver of truth in modern times.  Not by Scripture Alone will set the biblical and historical record straight.  But more important, as you learn the real truth about Scripture, Tradition, and the Church, this book will offer you the means to come to a very deep relationship with God and know how best to glorify him on this earth. This book is the single most important systematic, logical, sustained, direct, multifaceted treatment of this central issue that I know of. - Peter Kreeft

This book completely and utterly destroys the heretical doctrine of Sola Scriptura. The authors go into exhaustive detail about what the Bible and the Church teach regarding this doctrine and it also presents all of the evidence from the Church Fathers that they never held to this heretical doctrine.I read James White's book "Scripture Alone" and R.C. Sproul's book by the same name before reading this book. I also read "Sola Scriptura" by various authors including White and Sproul. It is an absolute no contest.

This is an excellent book consisting of a collection of essays by various Catholic scholars and apologists discussing specific topics relating to scripture and tradition. Each writer was given seemingly as much space as he wanted, so that some essays are about 30 pages while others over 100 pages. This allows the writers to be able to develop their case in detail. One of Sungenis's essays deals with the so-called "biblical evidence" for sola scriptura. This chapter is extremely detailed in going over the contexts of all possible passages along with the Greek to make an airtight case that the popular passages that are often appealed to in defense of sola scriptura do not warrant such an interpretation. It is a very strong chapter, which, alone does indeed refute sola scriptura since it is shown to be a non-biblical doctrine. In particular, the absurdity of using 1 Cor 4:6 as biblical proof of sola scriptura is made painfully and even humorously obvious in this chapter.Sungenis also wrote an essay over 100 pages called "Point-Counter Point" in which he considers quotes of actual objections to the Catholic doctrine or defenses of sola scriptura from Protestant authors like Geisler, White, and others. There are over 70 of these quotes, and Sungenis gives a full, well-thought answer to each one. This is especially helpful because he is answering very directly the actual arguments put forth by the main Protestant apologists, using their very own words, arguments, and definitions. The chapter on the belief in scripture and tradition of the early Church Fathers is simply overwhelming. It begins with a list of common "proof texts" that are often used by Protestant apologists to "show" that the early Church taught sola scriptura. It is quickly pointed out, however, that these same Church Fathers who supposedly taught scripture alone also have many other quotes where they talk about the Church and tradition in the same kinds of terms. What is conceded is that many Church Fathers taught the MATERIAL sufficiency of scripture as opposed to FORMAL sufficiency of scripture, which is not the same thing. The chapter then goes on for nearly 100 pages, offering lengthy quotes of many Church fathers showing that they had BOTH a very high view of scripture and a high view of the Church and tradition. In short, that the early Church Fathers did not teach sola scriptura. The last appendix in the book was a short debate between Patrick Madrid and a Protestant gentleman. It is a friendly debate, and a good way to see how actually Protestants defend their doctrine, as opposed to reading Catholics try and explain the best Protestant arguments before tearing them down. Here we see again the many problems with Sola scriptura, as Robert Sungenis provides commentary through out the debate, pointing out the places where the Protestant apologist dodges questions and gives unsatisfactory answers. Lest one thinks that the Protestant apologist is incompetent, he makes the distinction between sola scriptura and solo scriptura. In this sense, those who claim that this book only addresses the "false" notion of scripture alone (solo scriptura) and not the REAL Reformers doctrine of sola scriptura are incorrect. Even if you are farmiliar with the book "The Shape of Sola Scriptura", which quotes this book numerous times and attempts to rebut it, it still seems to me that "Not by Scripture Alone" does a fine job of making a much more convincing and rational case for the Catholic position.

Robert Sungenis covers about everything one person could cover in this exhaustive coverage of one issue. Yet he doesn't cover this subject from a simplistic viewpoint that overstates his position or understates the opposing view. He is very fair in his presentation of those who support Sola Scriptura, no matter the meaning they give to that belief. At points of convergence when two people will part intellectual company in understanding, he explains his beliefs convincingly without stooping to the despicable standard by defaming a position or person. Mr. Sungenis is fair to an extreme and I come away from his work with the belief that he truly wants to discover the authentic meaning of the issues and texts he has exhaustively examined. I would highly recommend his book on several levels: intellectual honesty, insightful and original thinking, willingness to listen, insistence on loving his neighbor, even when his neighbor disagrees to the point of having a disparately different theology and, more importantly, a different way of living. I applaud his efforts to, while respecting those of a diffferent view, express his obviously well researched and thought out expression of a belief that has extended through two millenia.

Great Product!

Thorough and well presented

Great book and fan of the Author. Every Catholic and people interested in why the Catholic Church is the one true Church may want to purchase this fine book.

It's fine if you're not looking for something rigorous; if you want a decent idea of Catholic objections to Sola Scriptura then this is a good resource. The quality isn't consistent from chapter-to-chapter, and I highly suggest passing over any chapter(s) written by Madrid (they are flippant and sloppy, both in content and in editing). One gets the impression that the effort put into each chapter, in general, was half-hearted (the strongest section of the book, to be honest, is Kreeft's introduction, I think).TLDR: if you're casually curious about the controversy, this book is okay. If you're seriously concerned about it, then go somewhere else.

He had a lousy week at work and this had come within a few days of ordering (on the worst day). He has been thrilled with your book program!Thank you for your excellent service!Sincerely,Angela
