A bit disappointed in this book. I don’t really see a need for this as it basically repeats the works of others that are already widely available. The book contains numerous spelling errors. As a “second edition†i would think the author would have a better editor to catch them.Glaring error is for the Elder Futhark - she mentions the 25th “rune†as the Black rune - which I think should have been the “blank†rune. It is interesting that she states in Chapter V that “the runes should never be mixedâ€, but when it comes to including the Anglo-Saxon runes, she states that it is just an extension of the Elder Futhark and ignores the first 24 runes to include five more. In discussing with Anglo-Saxon users who know the two systems (Elder and Anglo-Saxon Futharks), they will point out that there are many differences between the modern adaptations of the Elder Futhark meanings and those provided for the Anglo-Saxon Futhark by the rune poem. Not necessarily an exact duplicate of the 24 runes. After covering some of more well-known rune futharks, McDermott then includes some overviews/consolidations of the most known stories of Thor and Odin. These are ok as they are just retell the stories in her own words. But there are other resources as well for these and the other mythological “creatures†included.Chapter XII is a condensed repeat of Chapter V so not sure why the redundancy was necessary. The chapter on magic and spell work is especially confusing. It’s not really clear to me where this is coming from as the beginning of the chapter does not explain where this comes from. It could be workings created by Gardner for Wicca, stories that are passed on (or claimed to have been passed on), some ancient texts or writings, or made up by the author herself. But it talks about some 8 circles and then some spells within and no context of what culture, era, or resources these are supposed to originate from. The formatting is also confusing and disconcerting: sometimes bold, sometimes not. Some portions bold while in others just some of the words are. No apparent reason and no explanation for what a bold text would indicate. Also letters are inserted which appear to be for the runes to use, but the words of they should represent don’t make sense and appear to be Latin. The letters are not uniform in their capitalization and really not sure what they are supposed to be connected to. I would recommend NOT using any of these spells as they are a bit confusing and better to not create confusion in magic. The chapter on creating your own runes is ok. I find that using words like “should†when it comes to materials, methods, and colors is problematic as it imposes the author’s preferences on something that is not a proven fact. Just because someone does it and it works for them (or may have worked in some years past) does not make it the only way to do something, nor limits the power of the runes or the materials they are carved upon for our use. Likewise, the associations of color are just preference and could be indicated as the author’s preference and as a possible meaning or use for the color associations. The book included a sampler from Viking Mythology by Simon Hawthorne. At 60 pages, I merely glanced over it and did not feel like continuing to read this. Nice that the author is promoting another book and may be something of interest to others. So Runes by Larissa McDermott is ok. If someone discovers it and gets a start on their rune journey, they will be sent in a good general direction. As a tool for returned reference or review, there are many other resources that I think are better researched (with resources listed) than this. (Such as by Diana Paxson & Freya Aswynn)If a third edition corrects the many spelling errors, links/lists resources, and connects more to the culture(s) associated with the different futharks, I think this could be a better book.
If you are interested in Nordic Runes, then this handbook is for you.The author gives us the information about Runes-alphabet of mystery, history of runes, Norse Mythology background, Gods and Goddesses, interpretation of runes, mythological creatures, legends and tales of the Norse, how to read Runes and much more important information. I found this guide very informative and interesting. It is well written and good organized. All information is laid out in logically and easy to understand. The author has done awesome job in creating this book. I liked this handbook very much and I'm glad to have it in my library. I highly recommend this guide for those who are interested in Runes and need such type of information.
Kind of completely useless except one chapter, about 6 pages. You can't even find all the runes the interpret. Waste.
My father telling me about runes so much, I am so interested at it. I did a research about runes until I saw this book. This book explained elder futhark alphabet, anglo saxon alphabet, and ancient Latin alphabet. I learned the role of runes in divination. I also learned the interpretation of runes. This book shows how to interpret runes. This book taught me how to read runes. When I share this to my father I am sure that he will be amaze about this because he is a fan of runes too.
This book must be read carefully in order to understand deeply the meaning of Nordic Runes. This book teaches you the common procedures that are used in the reading and interpretations of Runes as well as the practice of magic using Runes. Its actually a well-written book with sufficient information that really gives you so much knowledge about runes. Very interesting topic.
It is so fun to learn about Runes knowing that this is the first form of writing mastered and used by Germanic people. This book will let us familiarize the runic alphabets and you will be amazed by their symbolic meanings that denote principle or power. The stories of where the Runes came from are very interesting and this book tackles it impressively. Reading the history of it seems like unveiling the mysterious connotation of Runes. This is a very good knowledge for each and every one to have. Learning this kind of information is a great factor to being intellectual and a well- informed individual.
I really find psychics, mystery and magic interesting topics to discuss and to read about. This is the reason why I picked a book like Runes. Aside from the fact that it has this mysterious cover, I know the book will give me new ideas and learning about Runes. I really don't regret reading this even a little bit. Every page I find interesting and I am so excited to read more when I flipped the page. What I like about this read is the history, the interpretations, how to read Runes, and the modern use of Runic alphabet that clearly discussed in all chapters. In totality, this is such an exciting and most informative read for me about Runes.
This book has a lot of wonderful information but it's annoying to read due to the typos on every page! It's almost as if it wasn't edited at all. I keep trying to get through it but become frustrated. That said, it really does contain a lot of useful information explained in a simple manner. Perhaps the bad typos are only in the Kindle edition?
