This story suffers from the curse of being a sequel: it does not live up to expectations. Though the message of working together is heartfelt, the execution of the message is lacking.I teach 3 year olds and have read the original Abiyoyo story to them. When they heard Abiyoyo Returns, they were not enthralled with it. I have read it to them a few times, and they ask me to read something else.
My daughter loves these books. She read them at school and kept talking about Abiyoyo. As soon as I took this out of the shipping package, she was super excited and reciting it beginning to end.
As we all know Abiyoyo is wonderful classic, and while "Abiyoyo Returns" serves as a decent sequel it lacks the full charm of its predecessor. I am aware that it is a children's book and the story is in a fantasy realm, but it lacks a basic logic; in the first one father and son are isolated, since they are considered a nuisance, but are welcomed back after "redeeming" themselves, in this book they bring back this beast to move a boulder...a boulder. If I recall the father can make anything disappear, why bring back this dangerous beast if you can make a boulder vanish. And now they're stuck with Abiyoyo, forced to feed him heaps of food to insure their safety. I understand that moral is that people can change, forgiveness, and acceptance, but under the fear of being eaten.
My daughter's teacher read the first Abiyoyo story to her in preschool, and she loved it. Glad to find this sequel as it's much happier than the first book.
A bit preachy (difficult for a K student to understand the overt liberal slant ), but a GREAT SUB PLAN when combined with Pete's Abiyoyo CD ! :)
My son's daycare loves Abiyoyo to the point of fighting over the book during reading time. Abiyoyo returns was perfect to increase the excitement over reading to an even higher level of energy.
This book was a great follow up to the first Abiyoyo --- it would have been even better to have a Pete Seeger CD along with it telling the story just like the first book. My Grandchildren all enjoyed this book -- 4 - 7 & 8 --- especially playing the CD in the car while they read the book in the back seat!Still just one suggestion - make a CD for the second book - Abiyoyo Returns!!
My music students loved this book. It was in great shape. Very pleased!
