About the Author
Harriet Doerr (1910-2002) was born in Pasadena, California, and attended Smith College in 1927, but received her B.A. from Stanford University in 1977, where she was accepted into the Creative Writing Program. She was a Stegner Fellow, received the Transatlantic Review Henfield Foundation Award and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Doerr’s first novel, Stones for Ibarra, won the 1984 National Book Award for First Work of Fiction, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award, the Godal Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Harold D. Vursell Award. Her second novel, Consider This, Señora, was a national bestseller. Doerr’s third and final book, The Tiger in the Grass, was a collection of stories and anecdotal pieces.

I love this book, and I've owned it twice before, but I've loaned them out and can't remember who I loaned them to. I love Mexico and especially the small villages. This author catches the goodness of the people, their caring for others, and their hard working and purposeful existence. I'm with the Evertons on their journey, experiencing their joys and sadnesses as they experience them. And yes, I'll probably loan it and purchase again.
This would make an excellent movie in the hands of an Almodovar or other director deep in Sarah’s Head. However, as a novel-meh. I don’t think it adequately portrayed rural Mexico in 3D, unless you go back 20 years. Still, PLEASE, some good director take this on as a movie!
Loved this book! We read it in my book club and all of us found the writing to be evocative, a bit mysterious, and lyrical. Doerr's descriptions of the Mexico landscape and weather are simply marvelous, and I say this as one who has never been fond of arid terrains! The fanciful, bitter-sweet mood of the stories has lingered with me for months. Great read!
This novel follows the experiences of Richard and Sara Everton, just over and under forty, when they move from the United States to a remote town in Mexico. There they revive the house and the mine once operated by Richard's grandfather. They intend to live there for the rest of their lives, but Richard is diagnosed with a blood disorder and given a forecast of five to six more years.In that time, Richard and Sara build their home, the mine and their lives among the local people. After an arresting opening, beautifully describing their move to Ibarra, the book reads like a fugue, moving from one scene to another, back and forth in time, in a dreamlike state. Sara possesses an active imagination and is fond of making things up, often imaging the details in life that she fails to see.The first few chapters are stunning, the writing drawing the reader fully into the Everton's world. Subsequent chapters were occasionally dense, losing the lightness and magic found in the opening.Doerr successfully avoids getting bogged down in the day-to-day details of life in Ibarra, focusing instead on the most significant characters and stories she heard during her stay there. A good read overall, this is a particularly good example for people interested in travel or cultural memoirs.
Richard and Sara Everton move from a sophisticated life in San Francisco to an old adobe house in super-rural Mexico where, on some harebrained idea, they think they can make a go of it by re-opening a copper mine abandoned by Richard's grandfather. It's an idyllic dream, and there are many good moments. But from the very opening of the book, we're told Richard will die, Sara will deny their problems till the end, and they will leave Ibarra without having achieved their dreams. The range and depth of characters in the little town, the juxtaposition of one culture against another, the assimilation of the atheistic Americans into the intensely Catholic community, the gorgeous descriptions of the landscapes, and the many side stories of the myriad characters all contribute to this book's perennial popularity. One gets the sense that the author's love and affection for her characters is real.It's a beautifully written book, and it's certainly incredible that Harriet Doerr wrote it, her first book (at least the first to be published), when she herself was already an old woman
my favorite book of all time. And I've read a lot. I read it back in the 80s for the first time and just re-read it. It is still as delicate and haunting and as simply stated as I remembered it . I wish that I could write the author but unfortunately she is no on earth any longer. Our book club chose it and we all loved it.
I liked this book so much I bought a dozen copies to donate to my book club so everyone could enjoy Harriet Doerr. I would have loved to know that woman! And boy can she tell a story. Great for anyone who still remembers enough high school Spanish to get the language references.
This gentle read introduces charming characters and an insight into how Americans might be viewed by a different culture. The love story of both place and time wind the principle characters through the village, and through their lives dealing with a terminal illness. This is no sob story but a lovely tribute tale.
